PHOTO ART FOR THE LIGHTER SIDE OF DARKNESS

BIOGRAPHY

The epitome of a European, with ancestors from all over the place, anywhere between Poznan and Paris. Born in Bochum in 1947, a couple of days before the dissolution of Prussia, therefore older than the Federal Republic of Germany. Finished College in 1967 with zero points in mathematics. But published own “Vergangenheitsrechnung” (Foretime maths) later. Bochum is not such a bad place (remember the song by Herbert Grönemeyer), for that reason studied at Ruhr Universität Bochum (University of the Ruhr): History of Art, English Language and Literature, Philosophy (Philosophy of Nature), plus assorted side subjects. Later just a tiny bit of Anthropology at the University of Bonn. Doctorate in History of Art after four years (having to stay down a year at school twice had, somehow, to be compensated). First job: Librarian at Universitätsbibliothek Bochum (Bochum University Library). Assistant Professor at “Kunsthistorisches Institut” (Institute for the History of Art) at Universität Bonn. Coming from a “new” University did, however, not go down well with the traditionalists at Bonn. Freelance journalist since 1983 (DIE WELT and “Rheinischer Merkur” plus a number of regional papers), Finance Consultant, later Marketing and Communications Manager for the computer printer manufacturer “Mannesmann Tally” until DIE WELT called one evening. Art Market Editor of DIE WELT since 1994 until July 31st 2010, and, having passed the “Habilitation” (general permit to teach at a University at professorial level with personal responsibility) at Duisburg University in 1987, also "Privatdozent" (Private Reader) in History of Art at the "Technische Universität" (Technical University) in Berlin.
